“Echoes In Pink” Breast Cancer Benefit Concert Shined Spotlight on Healing Hands Worldwide's Remarkable Mission
Kingston, Jamaica: The “Echoes In Pink” Breast Cancer Benefit Concert, held at the prestigious Jamaica Pegasus Hotel on October 27, 2023, was a powerful and heartfelt event that showcased the dedication of Healing Hands Worldwide (HHW) towards supporting breast cancer patients and students in need.
The concert, which drew an enthusiastic and diverse audience, featured two compelling speeches from the organization's founder, Dr. Erole McLean-Hobdy, and Executive Director, Mrs. Karen Nelson-Hughes. They shared the remarkable journey of HHW and the impact it has made on individuals and communities in the Caribbean and Africa.
Dr. McLean-Hobdy, an experienced oncologist, expressed her gratitude to the attendees and highlighted the dual mission of HHW, which includes two vital initiatives: The "One Patient at a Time" Initiative: This initiative is dedicated to providing no cost chemotherapy medications to uninsured women battling early-stage or non-metastatic breast cancer in collaboration with The University Hospital of the West Indies (UHWI) with the support of medical professionals such as Dr. Sheray Ward-Chin, Medical Oncologist, and Dr. Arlene Thorbourne, Director of Pharmacy. Dr. McLean-Hobdy emphasized the importance of early detection and treatment, which can be highly effective in addressing this prevalent cancer.
The "One Student at a Time" Initiative: HHW believes in the power of education and supports high-achieving students attending high school. The organization has been providing full scholarships to deserving students in Jamaica, ensuring they have access to quality education, mentorship, enrichment and a brighter future. Dr. McLean-Hobdy's motivation to establish HHW stemmed from her deep desire to give back to the community, especially those facing the financial challenges of cancer care. Her speech resonated with the audience, emphasizing the importance of their support in fulfilling the organization's mission. "I believe that we are our brother's keeper and we are blessed to be a blessing to others as we never know if and when we may find ourselves in a similar situation," stated McLean-Hobdy adding: "I have been overwhelmed by the support that we have received from Jamaicans here and abroad and stand here as a byproduct of and a testament to a great Jamaican education."
Mrs. Karen Nelson-Hughes, HHW's Executive Director, echoed Dr McLean-Hobdy's sentiments and emphasized the organization's serious commitment to its initiatives. She highlighted the impact HHW has had on the lives of breast cancer patients and students in need. "Our goal is simple, utilize our skills and expertise to support our community, and that is just what we do with our initiatives. The devastating impact of cancer around the world and particularly in the Caribbean and Africa cannot be understated, and the vital assistance that our organization provides is critical." Adding: "Our passion is real, and our results and impact are real, and for that, we are grateful, as we continue to raise awareness, promote healthy outcomes and support those who need it most." Additionally, Mrs. Nelson-Hughes underscored the importance of the "One Student at a Time" initiative, recognizing the significance of education in shaping the future. HHW's full high school scholarships have been instrumental in supporting high-achieving students on their educational and life journey.
Both speakers underscored the importance of supporting HHW's mission, emphasizing that even modest contributions can make a significant difference. It costs just $2500 US to provide a full course of eight lifesaving chemotherapy treatments for a breast cancer patient. The speeches from Dr McLean-Hobdy and Mrs. Nelson-Hughes served as a poignant reminder of the organization's mission and the impact it has on the lives of those it serves. The “Echoes In Pink” concert was not just a musical extravaganza but a call to action, encouraging everyone to come together and support HHW in making a positive impact, one patient and one student at a time. The “Echoes In Pink” Breast Cancer Benefit Concert, was held in partnership with various organizations, including Jamaica Reach To Recovery, Rituals Coffee House, PEPSI CO, Riddim FM, Trafalgar Travel, RUBiS Energy, and Visual Vibe and featured renowned artists such as two-time Grammy-nominated reggae sensation Etana, George Nooks, and Althea Hewitt.
