In a heartwarming and impactful weekend from October 11–13, 2024, Healing Hands Worldwide (HHW) took its mission to Cape Cod, Massachusetts, to share the transformative work we do and strengthen our network of supporters. Anchored by two signature events—a cocktail reception and an informational meet and greet—our trip was both inspiring and fruitful.
With the dedicated efforts of HHW representatives, namely, Erole Hobdy McLean, Danny Williams, Karen Nelson-Hughes, Colleen Wilson, and Dolace McLean, we connected with local communities, shared our story, and gained critical support for our programs providing FREE chemotherapy treatments for women diagnosed with Stage 2 breast cancer and academic scholarships for talented but underserved students.
A Weekend of Purpose and Planning
Friday: Laying the Foundation
Our team began the weekend with a site visit to the historic Wellfleet Preservation Hall. Guided by Heather, a representative of the venue, we finalized details for Saturday’s reception, ensuring every element of the evening would reflect the warmth and professionalism of HHW.
Later that day, Dan, one of our most dedicated supporters, graciously hosted us at his home for cocktails and hors d'oeuvres. This intimate gathering set the tone for the weekend, allowing us to meet members of the Cape Cod community while discussing plans for the events ahead.
Saturday: Sunset Reception at Wellfleet Preservation Hall
The highlight of the weekend, our Sunset Soiree, took place at the picturesque Wellfleet Preservation Hall. The garden-style setting, paired with Caribbean-inspired hors d’oeuvres courtesy of Sonia, owner of Island Café & Grill, created a vibrant and welcoming atmosphere.
As the sun dipped below the horizon, attendees moved indoors for an engaging presentation. HHW shared its story, showcased a moving video, and answered questions from the audience. This event also allowed us to connect with key figures like Pastor Brown, whose church supports Cape Cod’s sizable Jamaican community. This partnership holds promising potential for identifying women in need of our cancer care services.
The evening was deeply impactful. It provided a framework for future events, reinforced our commitment to Cape Cod, and raised significant awareness of our mission.
Sunday: Service and Connection at First Parish Brewster
Our Sunday began with a heartfelt church service at First Parish Brewster Unitarian Universalist Church, Dan’s home parish. During the service, Erole’s quick action in assisting a parishioner experiencing a medical emergency underscored the compassion and professionalism of the HHW team.
The service was followed by coffee and conversation, where we mingled with parishioners and invited them to our Informational Meet and Greet later that afternoon. This event, part of the church’s monthly speaker series, drew over 20 attendees. Through personal stories and an engaging Q&A, we highlighted the far-reaching impact of HHW’s programs and strengthened ties with this supportive community.
Impact and Insights
The Cape Cod trip was a resounding success, yielding over $3,000 in financial support and sparking new partnerships. We were especially moved by the local Jamaican diaspora, whose seasonal work in hospitality connects them deeply with our organization’s Jamaican roots.
A Grateful Heart
We extend our heartfelt thanks to Dan for his unwavering commitment to HHW. From securing event sites to leveraging his local connections, his efforts made this weekend possible. To all our supporters, attendees, and the Cape Cod community, thank you for embracing our mission and helping us bring hope to those who need it most.
As we prepare for another exciting year, we look forward to returning to Cape Cod, expanding our reach, and continuing to make a difference in the lives of women battling cancer and students striving for brighter futures.
